Arrived in New Orleans April 5th (Part 1)

Distance from St. Joseph Peninsula State Park, FL to New Orleans, LA: 637 km (395.8miles)
Total distance driven (includes in-city driving):  6,621.4 (4,114.3 miles)
Average gas consumption:  21.8L per 100 KM

We decided to reach the Big Easy in a single day so, that meant by-passing some pretty neat things:

Blue Angel's home in Pensicola.

Drove straight through Alabama.

Bye-bye Biloxi - we'll have to watch Biloxi Blues to see what we missed.

While we drove Jason booked us into Louisiana’s St. Bernard State Park in the St. Bernard Parrish.  The price was $20 per night – more aligned to what we were hoping for in camping prices.  We had heard various reports warning of crime in New Orleans – after talking to Rangers and Police Officers alike, we soon learned that the main tourist areas (such as the French Quarter) are safe.  The key thing is to be a smart tourist.  Watch your purse, your phone and your money; don’t go down streets that give you the willies.

Here are some pics for part one of our New Orleans update.

Of course Bourbon Street was our first stop.

Sure, we missed Mardi Gras but we found out French Quarter Festival started the next day. There was even a parade!

These two talented young ladies were our favourite performers by far.  What a great way to combine violin and guitar!  You can get a taste of their music here.  Here’s a link to their website.
